Belize – Caribbean Beauty in Central America
Many people dream about getting away from their normal daily life. May it be the chaotic big city life or the mundane routine – every now and then we are dreaming about paradise, adventure, and simply escaping, even if it is just for a couple of days.
One of the best destinations to get out of the dreadful routine might be Belize. This small country in Central America shares a border with Mexico on the north, Guatemala in the west, and the Caribbean Ocean in the east. When you think about a mixture of Mexican countryside and the lush life in the Caribbean, that’s what Belize feels like.
The country only has 320.000 residents, and the biggest city in Belize City with 75.000 residents. It is formerly known as British Honduras and therefore the official language is English. Many digital nomads and companies are drawn to the country since it is safe, has no language barriers, and offers a laid-back, Caribbean lifestyle.
But Belize offers so much more than business opportunities. The country is a mixture of tropical rainforests and turquoise blue ocean. In between the thick forest you can find old Mayan ruins. The region has a long history, and since most of the country is covered with rainforests, artifacts of ancient times have withstood the ravages of time. In Ladyville in the District of Belize, the oldest human artifacts have been found. A spearhead is dating back to 8000 BC and early settlements have been discovered in Cuello from 2500 BC.
The country is not only known for their history but also how they want to shape the future. 40% of the entire country is a natural reserve with species-rich flora and fauna. If you are exploring the jungle, you will come across many reptiles and birds as well as Jaguars and Pumas, which are very common.
The main tourist spots of the country are not on the mainland but in the several islands off the coast. You can find here the usual tourist spots, high-class hotels, and all amenities to forget each and every sorrow in the world. The accommodations on the mainland are a bit humbler but as breathtaking as a 5-star resort. You will find many wildlife and jungle lodges in the countryside, that prepare several guided tours.
One of the many adventurous tours might be a visit to the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. This reserve is the world’s first Jaguar conservation reserve with some of Central America’s tallest waterfalls. Another tour might take you to the Cayo District in the west of the country. Right at the border to Guatemala, you can find Xunantunich – a Mayan ruin that is over 1000 years old. Unlike Machu Picchu, this historical site is not overrun by tourists, and you can tag along with the archaeologists to get to know more about the ruins and the Mayan culture.
No matter if you want to escape the rain, lay on the beach, explore Mayan ruins or simply relax – Belize is one of the best destinations to do so.
